Test data
Test data are observations or results collected from a test or experiment to judge how a method, model, or assay performs for a defined purpose. They are used to estimate accuracy, reliability, limits, and other performance features under specified conditions.
What test data are
Test data are the results gathered from a test, assay, or prediction setup so that the method can be evaluated for a specific purpose. In data science, testing data are the held-out observations used to judge how well fitted prediction functions work; in laboratory testing, test data are the measurements or results used to assess whether a method performs as expected.

What is measured
The main things measured with test data are predictive accuracy, agreement with accepted reference values, reproducibility, and practical limits such as the lowest signal that can still be distinguished from no signal. These measurements help show whether the method is relevant to the question being asked and whether it is reliable enough for that purpose.

How test data are used
For prediction problems, a model is fitted on training data and then checked on testing data that were held out and collected under the same conditions. For laboratory methods, test data support validation by showing how a protocol behaves, what its limits are, and whether results are consistent when repeated with the same protocol. Validation means establishing performance for a defined purpose, not proving a method is perfect in every setting.

Limitations
Test data only support conclusions for the conditions under which they were collected. They can be limited by biological relevance, reproducibility, completeness, uncertainty, and by whether the test matches the effect or prediction target that actually matters. A method may be valid for one purpose and not for another.

How test data support evaluation
Gather observations from the test, assay, or held-out dataset.
Check accuracy, agreement, reproducibility, or other metric.
Look for detection thresholds, uncertainty, and condition-specific failures.
Use the evidence to support a defined use, not every possible use.
Test data flow from collection to comparison to limit-checking, ending in a purpose-specific decision.
Test data are the evidence used to evaluate how a method performs under the conditions where the data were produced.
