Gene expression

Gene expression is the process by which information in a gene is turned into a functional product. It often happens through transcription into RNA, and some RNA is then used to make proteins or works directly as a non-coding RNA.

What gene expression is

Gene expression is the process that converts information encoded in a gene into a function. In many cases this happens through transcription into RNA, and the RNA may either code for a protein or act as a non-coding RNA with its own function. Scientists also treat expression as a way to describe whether a gene is effectively turned on, and how much product it makes in a cell or tissue.

How it is controlled

Expression is not fixed. It changes across cell types and conditions, and it can behave like an on/off switch or like a dimmer that gives graded levels. The same gene may produce more or less RNA depending on regulatory signals. Gene products can also regulate other genes, so expression often sits inside larger control networks.

How it is measured

Gene expression can be measured directly by mRNA levels, including genome-wide and sometimes single-cell measurements. It can also be inferred indirectly by observing a gene product’s activity or a phenotype linked to the gene. These different readouts do not all measure the same thing: transcription can be instantaneously on or off, while mRNA levels often reflect an average over time.

Limits and prediction

Modern models can use DNA sequence and genetic variation to predict expression, but there are important limits. Some methods work better for common variants or for genes with strong local genetic effects, while others do not generalize well to new genes, new variants, or unseen people. Predictions may capture only the genetic part of expression, not all biological causes.

SEE THE IDEA

From gene information to measurable expression

Gene DNA is transcribed into RNA, RNA can produce protein or function directly, and the resulting activity is used to judge expression.

Gene expression links genetic information to function, and the readout depends on what is measured.
